Joining our Community

The first step in becoming a part of our community at Calvary is to take a new member class. This 12 week course will help you understand our theology and doctrine.

new member class

Pastor Ockree leads a class each Fall and Spring to bring adults into membership at Calvary.

Classes meet on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

What will I Learn in Class?

Introduction to Lutheran Beliefs: The class usually begins with an overview of Lutheran theology, including key doctrines such as justification by grace through faith, the sacraments, and the authority of Scripture. Participants learn about the distinctives of the Lutheran tradition within the broader Christian faith.

History and Identity of the LCMS: Members are introduced to the history, mission, and organizational structure of the LCMS. They learn about the denomination’s roots, its commitment to biblical authority, and its various ministries and outreach efforts.

Church Practices and Worship: The class covers the order of worship in an LCMS church, including the significance of liturgical elements such as the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, and hymnody. Participants gain an understanding of why these practices are meaningful within the Lutheran tradition.

Membership Expectations and Responsibilities: New members learn about the expectations and responsibilities of membership in the church, including attendance, financial stewardship, involvement in ministries, and participation in the life of the congregation.

Community and Fellowship: The class emphasizes the importance of Christian community and fellowship within the church. Participants learn about opportunities for spiritual growth, service, and building relationships with other members.

Opportunities for Involvement: New members are introduced to the various ministries, programs, and service opportunities available within the congregation. They learn how they can use their gifts and talents to contribute to the life and mission of the church.

Pastoral Care and Support: The class may include information about pastoral care and support available to members, such as counseling, prayer, and assistance during times of need or crisis.

Next Steps for Membership: Towards the end of the class, participants are informed about the process for formally joining the church, including the steps for baptism or confirmation (if applicable) and the reception of new members into the congregation.

Q&A and Discussion: Throughout the class, there are opportunities for participants to ask questions, share their own faith journeys, and engage in discussions about the material covered.

“I would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God’s word becomes corrupt.”
